Play vs Study ?

Aktualisiert: 1. Juli 2025

A reflection on today's drawing session 23rd June 2025

My intention for today’s figure drawing session was simple: to study more deeply, to refine, to learn.

I planned to watch a tutorial and focus on technique.

And looking back, I can feel that this intent came from a place of slight inner imbalance.

I think I actually needed something else.

So, the internet connection suddenly wasn't stable.

— And somehow this small disruption appeared to me to be a quiet invitation to do something differently.

Instead of watching a tutorial, I opened the Adobe Fresco app on my iPad and began to draw, using a photo of a female figure in an inspiring posture as my reference.

That’s when the fun begun: I let the lines and everything flow very freely and even a bit wildly.

Here you can see the first result:

After drawing a bit with the brushes I usually work with I felt intuitively drawn to use the oil brush. And the lines, color, movement and interesting texture of the digital oil brush actually resulted in more interesting figure drawings that I share below.

I love the results because I think they're so alive, so vibrant and experimental

And isn't it fascinating: a figure drawing session that I had intended to be more about serious study resulted in a pure creative flow reflected in these unexpected works.

This reminded me of the early days of my drawing journey - at the time my approach was always fueled by a desire that felt like a creative urge to express immediately back then, drawing expressively and immediately grounded me. Drawing helped me to center myself & to ground in my own truth. Nowadays typically I start out from being centered which generally allows to engaging in drawing much more deliberate & concentrated than earlier .

Today actually the coincidences, the energy, my own state of being led me to this approach and the results - I think are great, I find. I love them.

So, why do I share this here in this blog.

I share this with you as a reminder that at times it's actually not the disciplined way that we are meant to take yet actually the wild one the path that seems scary and maybe even uncontrollable.

So this blog post could be a permission slip — for you, and for me to remember that at times it's perfectly okay to just play. Playtime might be more worthwhile than we expectand that matters. Play matters. Wildly exploring from a place of curiosity matters.

I matters to me. ☺️

How about you?

To sum up: sometimes life guides us in unexpected ways

And that might be the best thing that could happen for us right now, this day, or even in our life…😉
