Four Colors/ Four Postures /One Page

Figure Drawing Practice – June 3rd, 2025

This afternoon brought a surprising and joyful shift in my creative rhythm.

I began with some opposite-hand sketches — a playful warm-up that felt light, a little bit childlike, soft, and surprisingly expressive. I even shared one of them in my Instagram stories.

Soon after, I found myself drifting —

a little restless, unsure whether I’d return to drawing at all.

I stepped outside, spent a little time in nature, played with the cat...

and somehow, something softened.

When I came back in, the focus had returned.

It wasn’t until around 5:15 p.m. that it really clicked. My concentration deepened, the pencil felt alive in my hand again, and I entered into a truly beautiful flow state.

I ended up working on four female figures, each inspired by the same reference model but captured in different postures. What made this session unique was how the colored pencils on my desk began to guide the process. Their tones felt inviting — so I decided to use them all.

My approach was simple and intuitive.

I worked in two-minute intervals per figure, starting with my familiar reddish-brown pencil. After moving through all four postures, I switched to a new color and began the cycle again. Each layer of color added gesture, presence, energy, and depth. The page slowly transformed into something vibrant, rhythmic, and alive.

Eventually, I felt called to return to all four drawings to deepen them further. One figure received a cap — a small but expressive detail. She also got a subtle indication of a tattoo on her shoulder, gently suggested through lines. These additions happened naturally and spontaneously.

Now that the page is full, I see four women who share a common source — and yet each carries her own mood and movement. They sit beside each other on the page, each within her own world. There’s rhythm, playfulness, elegance, strength, grace, and flexibility — all held together within a lively flow of line and color.

I felt immediately inspired to share this page with you. The freshness, the aliveness of the drawings asked to be seen — and so here they are:

Key insights from today’s practice:

  • Layering colored pencils in timed intervals created a dynamic dance between intuition and form.

  • Revisiting each figure after each drawing round with a new color helped me stay fresh — and kept the process playful.

  • The use of multiple colors actively supported me in avoiding rigidity, and instead invited more movement and spontaneity.

🎥 By the way, here’s a figure drawing time-lapse I shared a while ago, created in a similarly colorful way. I called it Colorful Symphony.
